Tips to Save Water
Every day, we use approximately 36 million liters of water — to drink a glass of cold water, to shower, flush the toilet, prepare meals, or water our plants. When we use water consciously, we not only contribute to protecting the environment, but we also manage our water expenses more effectively. This brochure provides helpful tips on how to save water. A small adjustment can make a big difference.
Every Drop Counts – Be Conscious of Your Water Use
Check Your Water Meter
To detect leaks, close all faucets and check your water meter. When all faucets are closed, the red indicators on the meter should remain stationary. If one or more indicators are moving while all faucets are closed, there may be a leak. If you will be away for more than one week, close the valve connected to the meter to prevent water from running in case of a leak during your absence.
Check Your Toilet(s)
Regularly check that your toilet is not leaking. Consider installing a dual-flush toilet. This system offers two flush options: a half-flush for liquid waste and a full flush for solid waste.
Check Faucets and Showers
A single drop per second can add up to 20 liters per day. Regularly check all faucets and showerheads for leaks.
Limit Water Use When Washing Dishes
When washing dishes by hand, do not leave the tap running. Fill one basin with soapy water and another with clean water for rinsing. A dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes by hand. A dishwasher with at least a 3-star/AAA rating can reduce water usage from approximately 40 liters to 18 liters per wash.
Limit the Frequency of Watering Plants
Water plants early in the morning or later in the afternoon when there is less sun. It is better to water the roots and the soil around your plants instead of spraying water on leaves and flowers.
Use a Bucket When Washing Your Car
Wash your car on the grass in your yard and use a bucket to wash and rinse it. You will save water while also watering and fertilizing your yard — car wash soap contains certain phosphates similar to nutrients found in various fertilizers.
